MMDA Prepares Metro Areas for Possible Flooding This Wet Season

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is stepping up its flood preparedness efforts as the wet season approaches in Metro Manila. The agency has started early measures such as cleaning waterways, removing silt from rivers, and inspecting pumping stations to reduce the risk of flooding in major areas.

MMDA Flood Preparation Efforts

The MMDA has been preparing for several months ahead of the rainy season. Officials reported that initial heavy rains already showed weak points in the system, leading to further improvements in flood control strategies. The agency continues to monitor flood-prone areas and adjust its response plans.

Cleaning of Waterways and Pumping Stations

A major part of the MMDA’s strategy is the continuous cleaning of esteros, drainage systems, and pumping stations. These efforts help keep water flowing properly during heavy rainfall and prevent blockages that can worsen flooding.

Each year, thousands of tons of waste are removed from Metro Manila waterways and pumping stations. The MMDA also installs garbage traps and regularly inspects flood control equipment to prevent damage and system failure during storms.

Garbage and Water Hyacinth Problems

One of the main causes of flooding identified by the MMDA is improper waste disposal. Despite regular cleanup efforts, garbage continues to clog drainage systems due to illegal dumping and lack of discipline in some areas.

Water hyacinths from Laguna de Bay also contribute to blockages in rivers such as the Pasig River. The MMDA is studying ways to convert collected water hyacinths into useful materials like charcoal briquettes to reduce waste and improve waterways.

Infrastructure Issues Contributing to Flooding

Aside from garbage, the MMDA also pointed out infrastructure-related problems that worsen flooding. Some drainage systems are reportedly not properly connected, causing wastewater to flow into streets instead of proper drainage channels.

The agency is monitoring issues such as poor drainage compliance, incorrect wastewater discharge, and improper downspout connections. These problems are being addressed to improve overall flood management in Metro Manila.

Stricter Monitoring Against Illegal Dumping

To prevent further flooding, the MMDA is strengthening its monitoring efforts using CCTV cameras and the No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP). Violators of anti-dumping rules may face fines ranging from ₱500 to ₱5,000 depending on the offense.
