Cayetano Begins Term as Senate President Amid Impeachment Tensions

The Philippine Senate has entered a new leadership phase after Senator Alan Peter Cayetano was elected as the new Senate President. The change came after a majority vote removed Senator Vicente Sotto III from the position during a politically sensitive period in Congress.

Senate Leadership Change

The leadership shift happened when 13 senators supported a motion to declare all Senate positions vacant and elect a new leader. Ten senators voted against the move, while two abstained.

This decision officially ended Sotto’s term as Senate President, which began in September 2025, and marked the start of Cayetano’s leadership in the chamber.

Several senators supported the leadership change, including Alan Peter Cayetano, Pia Cayetano, Rodante Marcoleta, Bong Go, Robin Padilla, Loren Legarda, and others. Two senators abstained from voting.

On the other hand, senators such as Vicente Sotto III, Risa Hontiveros, Panfilo Lacson, Francis Pangilinan, Bam Aquino, and others voted against the transition.

The voting showed a clear division inside the Senate during a politically tense moment.

The leadership transition happened while discussions about a possible impeachment case involving Vice President Sara Duterte were gaining attention in Congress. If the impeachment proceeds, the Senate will serve as the impeachment court, making the Senate President role highly important.

Cayetano’s Statement and Transition

During the session, Cayetano confirmed that enough senators supported the change before the vote took place. He also mentioned security concerns during the transition and apologized for not speaking directly with outgoing Senate President Sotto earlier.

Sotto’s Exit from the Senate Presidency

Cayetano later expressed respect for Sotto, acknowledging his role as a statesman despite political differences between them.
